Bringing children to the springs is popular, but parents need to prepare. The water is a warm 27°C (81°F), making it comfortable for swimming. However, the basic facilities and deep water mean you must pack properly and stay vigilant.

How deep is the water at Chemka Hot Springs?

The water depths vary dramatically, reaching up to 10 meters in the center of the Main Lagoon.

The pool floors drop off suddenly. There is a deep pool where the subterranean volcanic source bubbles up. Because of this, weak swimmers and young children need flotation devices. You can hire inflatable tubes on-site for extra safety.

Are there shallow areas for younger kids?

Yes, The Shallows and Roots section offers narrower edges where children can wade safely.

This area is bordered by massive fig tree roots. The roots act as natural benches and underwater bridges. Families often use this section to avoid the active swimming of the Main Lagoon. Wear water shoes because the submerged roots can be slippery or jagged.

What are the supervision rules for children?

Official site rules state that children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

There are no on-duty lifeguards at the oasis. The sudden drop-offs make unattended swimming dangerous for kids. Parents must stay in the water with their children or watch them closely from the immediate shoreline.

Will the fish bite my children?

The natural Garra Rufa fish do not bite; they only gently nibble dead skin off feet.

These tiny doctor fish live in the shallow edges. If you sit still, they will approach your feet. Sudden movements scare them away. Many older children find the ticklish sensation entertaining.

Is the drive to the springs okay for kids?

The journey takes 1 to 1.5 hours from Moshi and involves a very bumpy off-road section.

The final stretch follows rough dirt tracks through dry riverbeds. It is a dusty ride. Booking an organized tour in a closed, air-conditioned vehicle is much more comfortable for families than taking an open motorcycle taxi.

What should families pack for a visit?

Bring water shoes, eco-friendly sunscreen, and a waterproof bag for your valuables.

Facilities are very basic at the site. Bring a dry change of clothes for the ride back. Pack bottled drinking water and a quick-dry towel. Local vendors sell basic snacks, but you should bring your own food if your kids are picky eaters.
